Supporting investment in affordable housing through ballot Proposition H: In October and November 2006, more than 400 leaders from One LA - IAF institutions participated in precinct walks in their local neighborhoods to get out the vote in support of Prop H, the $1 billion affordable housing bond for the City of Los Angeles.
The highlight of the campaign was a joint precinct walk conducted by six different congregations in the Mid City area of Los Angeles on October 29th. More than 200 leaders participated along with City Council President Eric Garcetti and President Pro Tem Wendy Greuel. The event was hailed as the largest get out the vote effort in Los Angeles in the 2006 election season.
Unfortunately, while Prop H garnered an impressive 62.3% of the vote, it fell short of the two-thirds majority required by California law. In One LA - IAF precincts, however, Prop H was supported by 77% of voters. One LA - IAF leaders are in discussions with political and business groups about how to capitalize on this strong showing of support in order to find solutions to LA's affordable housing crisis.
Protecting low-income homeowners in Pomona: In 2006, the Pomona Cluster of One LA - IAF successfully stopped the destruction of homes in Pomona's low-income neighborhoods. The demolition was intended to provide for the development of luxury condominiums in the long-time working class community. In addition to stopping the development plan, One LA - IAF leaders in Pomona negotiated a change in the zoning for the neighborhood from multi-family to single family homes. This change aligns zoning with neighborhood reality and will ensure continued protection from condominium development.
